North American Wildlife: North American K-9's: Pictures of red fox kits

This is the same fox den that I photographed the red fox sub adult at in 2012. I have been looking forward to going back to this den all year in hopes that there would be another litter of kits in the den. Sure enough, this year there is a litter of 4 kits.

This gallery starts with the first time I saw the kits. It will continue throughout the summer until my last photoshoot of them this summer. The further along in the gallery, the older they get.

  • I had been to this den three times already. Finally on the fourth evening two little faces cautiously emerged out of the darkness allowing me to view them for the first time.
  • This little fox was quite curious about the sound of the camera shutter. He couldn't quite make out what the clicking sound was.
  • As this was my first sighting of the fox kits and their first sighting of me, they were very cautious, remaining inside their den. At the same time they were curious and couldn't help peeking out from time to time.
  • It has been a week since I have seen these fox kits. They look like they have grown a lot since I last saw them.
  • I believe these red fox kits are about 9 weeks old. The last (and first) time I saw them it looked like they still had a tinge of blue in their eyes if the sun shon on them the right way. Their eyes turn brown at 8 weeks, so my guess is they were right around that age.

  • I had been to this fox den about ten times and had seen one or two foxes each time. This one evening one came out, then two and as I kept on clicking, I think the sound of the camera shutter intrigued them as the two shy foxes came out as well.

  • All four fox kits get involved in a little play session. The fox kits are getting more fun to watch week to week as they get older and more active.
  • These kits enjoy a little sparring session.

  • The kits start to perk up as they listen to coyotes howling in the distance.
  • The fox kits heard coyotes howling off in the distance. Moments later they scooted down into the den and that was pretty much the end of our photo session that night.

  • Just a couple of weeks ago, all four fox kits could pretty much squeeze out of that den hole simulaneously. Now two of them appear to take up that same space. They are really growing quickly.
  • In the late evening last light, these two foxes came out of their den and displayed a little affection.
  • These fox kits were temporarily distracted by a fly buzzing around their heads.
  • These kits are growing so quickly you can almost watch them grow!
  • These fox kits enjoy a play session in the early evening.
  • I can tell the sexes between a couple of the foxes based on their size and actions, but they look so similar that I get them confused. I think this one is a little girl. She is smaller and all of her features are more petite.
  • After my photo shoot was over and my car was packed I decided to take a few more pictures of the fox kits in case they were still out of the den. As I was passing by two foxes were still curious, so I stopped to snap off a couple more images.

  • This red fox kit seemed bored as he came out of his den and just stared at me.
  • This kit's siblings didn't come out of the den tonight, so he ran around the entrance to the den for a bit, then found a stick to play with and bat around a bit. Then he came to the edge of the road, sat down and stared at me as if to say {quote}My siblings don't want to leave the den tonight. Will you play with me?{quote}

  • I've never seen a fox climb a tree before. These tree branches provided the perfect playground for the kits.
